Mcdonalds quits crimea as fears of trade clash grow

The retailer's decision has been branded a "disgraceful step in the right direction" by the US Chamber of Commerce and came as it was revealed more stores have been shut than expected.

US retail giant McDonald's has announced it is ceasing retail operations in the crime-ridden Central African Republic, although its operations in a number of neighboring countries have continued to flourish.

However, it warned its international customers – as well as local citizens – that "there are certain conditions", including the country's strict law on "associations" – and that the US will only "give certain" permits.

With the country's capital Rongo, McDonalds also announced it will close 1,100 stores across the country as well as the nearby city of Dibowre.

The firm has said it is taking the step because it needs to close the number of stores in the country, which could mean up to $35m (£20m) has to be spent to complete the job.

McDonald's, which took its retail strategy from Britain's Asda, has decided to expand into the Central African Republic following a "frictionless transition to a new model" due to a change in the law of the land.

The Central African Republic is Africa's least developed country in terms of economic development and has a very poor healthcare system.

On social media, the country's leaders have been quick to warn McDonald's of the risks of operating in an area where violence is rife, with President Francois Bozize calling the move "a shameful act of stupidity".

In a statement, McDonald's said it was following the regulations of the country and "as a consequence, many of our local partners in Central African Republic need to give us these permits".

The move follows a similar ban on foreign operations in January last year and the deaths of dozens of people on a train at the capital Bangui last month.

McDonald's has made it clear it has no intention of continuing its operations there in the foreseeable future.

"There is no plan to continue operating from Bangui's territory if the country is free of armed groups," the company said. "We have a number of local partners working for us in Bangui and we will respect the law, whether it takes place in capital or out of capital.

"Our focus now is to deliver good value for our local partners, who have worked tirelessly, responsibly, and with great enthusiasm, to improve their lives."

Police probe sms messages inciting racial violence

WASHINGTON — The FBI is investigating whether a message that said, "I told your parents I'm gonna kill you if they don't marry you!" was sent to another girl during a sexting session — but is not linking her to the case, officials said Sunday.

That investigation began in February after a 19-year-old woman who went by the handle "Rebecca Doe" sent a message to her friend, saying she and Doe were in an argument over their sexual activity, an FBI spokesman said.

"So I told her I had to tell her and she wasn't going to talk to me," the woman wrote the friend on a message exchange last month. Doe is a 16-year-old from Maryland who goes by Regan.

Doe had already contacted the Washington Post with the messages and had a message from one of the other girls, saying she had heard about the case from her friend in Maryland. One of the messages was from the friend to Doe, whom the woman said is currently underage, the FBI spokesman said.

That message included a series of graphic sexual references about the sexual abuse, including saying: "The sexual organ of anyone 14 or younger in this state will be shot/gassed/cut open."

"When asked if she could share these photos/video to her friends and family, Rebecca did not have an answer," FBI spokesman Peter Carr said.

Doe then began to speak to her friend and tell her the same story, Carr said, including the victim's name and other details of the case. The friend was then in New York but then in Washington. That's when FBI officials interviewed her and learned her messages had gone public in Maryland, the spokesman said.

Afterward, FBI officials in Baltimore, Washington and New York all followed up with New York, and the girl who sent the messages has been offered counseling by a local agency, according to the FBI.

Both authorities were able to match the messages to the 17-year-old who had written the messages, who the girl believed to be Doe.
